ireland and then some.

It's rainy and green today. Suiting, because today happens to be Saint Paddy's Day. Am I the only blogger in the entire web mentioning this? Perhaps--ah, well. I have always loved Ireland, so I shall dedicate a few lines to its holiday.

What is there not to love about Ireland? The cliffs, the stone fences, the mossy fields dotted with sheep, the thousand-year-old history still preserved among quaint villagers.

I'd say I'm pretty lucky (four-leaf clover lucky, maybe?) to live in the one state that is most like Ireland. Oregon is wet, and green, and pretty--without the accents and old villages, perhaps, but still as like it as you can get.

..Nevertheless, it is on my bucket list to visit Ireland one day; to explore the castles and crags and simply wander as a globetrotter. And I mean, seriously:
;)

disclaimer: that quote goes for guys and girls, just so ya know--I'll listen to an Irish lass just as long as an Irish lad. And I really never call guys "cute--" I just thought it was a pretty funny quote. :)

salt & straw. and other random portland things.

Do you like ice cream? Mm, me too. Pretty much every single kind out there, with the exceptions of Green Tea (bleh) and Pistachio (meh).

I'm an Oregon girl. More specifically, a Portland-er. (okay, so I don't actually live in Portland, but I'm about 1/2 hour away). If you don't know Portland, it's a beautiful urban city; very 'green,' very hip, and very health-oriented. Seriously, in the City of Roses (because yes, we're known for those, too), if you bike to work and shop at Whole Foods Market, you are majorly awesome.

One of the things I love about Portland are all the small, crazy cool yummy places. Oh, and I forgot to mention: for a foodie business, crafting local + being utterly unique = win. We have tons of little French-ish cafes, cozy bakeries, and, of course, creameries.  Like Salt & Straw.

This is a pretty random post, because for starters, I haven't even been to Salt & Straw.  But I saw an ad for it the other day, and was thinking, "Oh my goodness, this place looks amazing--" and then I realized it was right in my own homecity! So I thought I would post about it and file it under the categories of "filling you in about my home" and "things I love." A.k.a., "Portland," and "ice cream."

Salt & Straw is a pretty amazing ice creamery located in uptown Portland, Oregon. As I said above--I've never been there. But listen to this and gaze with me upon these pictures, and I think you will agree that this place should be on mine and your's "places-I-wanna-go" Pinterest boards.

For starters, the ice cream is crazy, yet delicious--or so I've heard. I mean, here are some of the flavors:

Oregon Kiss
Ocumare Single Origin Chocolate
Catalonian Breakfast
Pear with Blue Cheese (not too sure about this one..)
Arbequina Olive Oil
Sumptown Coffee Cold-Brewed with Cocoa Nibs
Chocolate with Gooey Brownies
Lemon Basil Sorbet
Honey Balsamic Strawberry with Cracked Pepper
Double Fold Singing Dog Vanilla
Sea Salt Ice Cream with Caramel Ribbon
Melon with Coppa

..and the list goes on. Apparently, Salt & Straw's ice cream is made with 17% Butterfat (helloooo calories!), churned with care "to be sure very little air is let in to ensure a nice bite," and kept low on sweetening "so the flavors can shine through." And listen what they do to ensure the caramel in "Caramel Ribbon" is amazing:

To take the edge off a bit, we've spent hours
over a hot stove perfectly burning caramel
for the sweet + salty combo that
you can't have just one lick of.

Um, yum.

I guess all that needs to happen now is me visiting the place of glory. What flavor would you pick--or, more dramatically--what flavor will you pick when you come visit me and we go to Salt & Straw for reals?  ;) I'm thinking Big Hibiscus Sherbet or Grandma Malek's Almond Brittle with Salted Ganache. :]

So there you have it. A little bit of Portland for ya. And just in the spirit of educating my readers about the places and spaces where I abide (because I am really and truly a real person and not just a blogging robot, in case you wondered), and in case there are some trivia geeks among us, here a few of my personal goods and bads about Portland.

The Good:

The gorgeous gardens. >> We have many--the Rose Garden, which absolutely stunning during rose season, and definitely one of our trademarks, the Japanese Gardens, etc.

The many running/walking/hiking paths. >> Portland is quite literally a city in the woods. There is city, and then, out of the blue, there are...woods. Trails are numerous, and I like that.

The coffee shops. >> I don't spend much time in these, due to lack of funds and the state of being, currently, a non-coffee drinker (though I do like it), but we have tons of cute ones. :)

The Bad:

Portland is the Human Trafficking hotspot of the nation. >> Just found this out this year, and believe me, you will never catch me walking around the city alone at night. Eek.

Portland is insanely weird. >> Yup, I wouldn't blame you for seeing hippies waving peace signs and sporting dreadlocks when you think, "Portland." And you will see numerous bumper stickers saying, "Keep Portland Weird!" ..if you ever travel our way. o.O

Portland is insanely and annoyingly liberal. >> 'Nuff said.

---

So. There's my little random post about Salt & Straw and other random Portland things. :) Come and visit me, whydontcha?

when all else fails, eat a creamsicle.

frosty. creamy. orangey. dreamy.

those four little words equal what? my creamsicle.

it is hot. as summer usually is. and I love it. because when all else fails {in this sense, the temperature}, eat a creamsicle.

---------------------------------------------

for now: I am keeping busy. besides schoolwork (ugg. yes. still. don't ask.), I am in the midst of designing. reading like c-r-a-z-y. entertaining guests. morning runs (it's not hot yet at 6:45 a.m.). attempting at healthy eating (creamsicles do not count!).

ahead: finishing school. mollie, a good friend from CA, visiting. <3 camping. visiting our amazing friends and pen-pals, the H. family. watching movies. catching up on letters. my sixteenth birthday (the 15th!). team marathon + last minute cross country training. cross country. o.O

hot weather plans, anyone?

...and as we speak, summer is sneaking out the back door...

ghiradelli, beethoven, and old books.

Tumblr_llgk1kbgbj1qe2g64o1_500_large

So, I am officially off of my sweet-free challenge.

It is a good feeling.

I had berry cobler and vanilla ice cream yesterday, and with no guilt I just had a handful of Ghiradelli chocolate chips. ...Ooh, those things are amazing. The absolute best chocolate chips I have ever had--and that's sayin' something. ;)  But, I've promised myself that I will exert some self-control, and change my old "it's-sweet-I-want-it-and-I'll-eat-all-I-can-manage" ways. o.O

Okay, I wan't that bad...

-------------------------------------------

This Saturday morning, it being gloomy and wet out {and yesterday is was 75 degrees!}, after the completion of weekend chores and mapping out what is left of my schoolwork to be done, I sat down at my piano and plunked out a few dreary notes. Don't get me wrong--I like rain. Love it, actually. I just wanted to echo the mood. :] So, I plunked out a few dreary notes...and decided out of the blue to play every single piece by Ludwig van Beethoven that I own. Yes, a Beethoven marathon. Opus 1 thru 22, Sonata 15, and 22, and 34...the list goes on. It was actually strangely enjoyable, though classical music can become a bit of a drag if you play too much of it. :]

Tumblr_lg25l3xzpy1qcxje2o1_500_large

..Thus, the whole morning passed away. Perhaps Bach, tomorrow? ♫

-------------------------------------------

Lately, old books have been my passion. The ones that we've had for years; the ones great-grandma read when she was a child...I've gotten them out to sniff them and read. Sniff them, because the smell of old books is one of the most wonderful smells in the world {providing you haven't spilled water upon them and left them in the attic. That is by no means a romantic smell}. And the way old books speak--the way their authors and authoresses write. It refreshes me, somehow, to breathe in their innocence and charm.

One of my never-fading dreams is to someday stand in one of those huge collector's libraries, surrounded by the delicious musty, leathery oder of antique novels. Complete with the attached rolling ladder. ♥

..A swivel staircase would suffice, too. :]

Speaking of chocolate and music {are we?}, I leave you with a quote and two photos which I find immensly delightful.

...wonderful."

Hair Grows. Who Knew?

I always wanted long locks, from the day that I realized that I even had hair. I love long hair. I would die for long hair {though that wouldn't make any sense..}. Alas, Mom had other plans. She knew the fuss and fury tangles make among youngsters, and thus, "chop, chop!" went the scissors, whenever my tresses showed the least sign of growing past my chin.

I suppose she was wise. But I was heartbroken. How would you feel if your uttermost dream vanished every few months in the form of the barbershop? I didn't complain. I didn't even hate the barber. In fact, I enjoyed haircuts, because I was resigned to my fate and knew that making a fuss would not change things.

When I was around eleven, Mom didn't take me to the hair cutter's quite so often. My hair grew to my shoulders, and there it stayed. It was trimmed nicely every so often, and never given too much of a "chop," but it refused to grow to my dream length.

When I was fourteen, I joined the local distance running (Cross Country) team. My hair, even at shoulder-length, was a bother--always sweaty, brushing against my back when I ran in a most displeasing manner, forever escaping from my ponytail. So, by my own accord, I went in for a major "chop, chop!"  It turned out even more major than I had wanted, but it was all good.

After the Cross Country season ended, I still had my short hair, and I began to miss long braids and side ponytails. I determined that I should have my lifelong dream of long hair at last, and thus solemnly promised myself that I would not go short again until I had reached my goal.

Here I am, nearly two years later, and I think I am beginning to get my wish at long last. My hair is the lengthiest its ever been, and I think that by the end of my 16th year, I will be set. :) Yes.

...and on a minor note, I totally wouldn't mind having Rapunzel's hair.

Ooh, yeah. Maybe that should be a more long term goal...;)

Drivin' Down the Road...♥

..in my little pink Mustang. :)

Or Cadillac. Or any other kind of antique pink car, really.

..Aren't they just darling? One of these would be a runner-up dream car.

♥

Notice I said, "runner-up dream car?" That's because this baby blue gets first place:

Old Blue

..Yeah, so the girl with the pink blog is a sucker for old Ford trucks. Go figure. ;)

♥What is your dream car?♥

My Dream Camera..

..Would be large, and black, and Nikon. It would have amazing focus, a delicious "pashoo" sound when a moment is captured, a lovely little eyehole, and perfect macro.

I would call him Nikky, and he would be mine.

:)

..And as long as we're daydreaming here, I might as well add that Nikky would have a pal named Shoot, and they would always be together.

Alas, Nikky and Shoot together would be a savings-account-busted price. Why, even little Nikky himself is a mint: $699, to be exact. *Cough cough gasp*

o.O

But, but, but--we're so in love! We met at a well-known online site, ;) and everyone says we were meant to be together.

*Sigh*

...Isn't it a shame when dreams are expensive?

Rainbow Cake. ♥

I think that the rainbow was one of God's most spectacular creations. I mean, what better way to cheer up Noah and co. after a ginormous devestating catastrophe that robbed them of their friends and homes than with..

..this beauooooteeeful thang? I think I would have made a sacrifice, too. o.O

Kidding. :]

~~

Soooo...with rainbows in mind, I thought I would share something that pretty much put a huge, cheesy, 'me-want-that-for-birfday' grin on my face as soon as I saw it.

Rainbows. Cake. The ultimate layered delicacy. Booyah.
No fancy French cupcakes for me, than you very much:
you're looking at my future 16th birthday cake, right thar. :]

..Is that cheerful, or is that cheerful?!

Call me a little kid, but making this is going to be the most amazing part. Have I ever told y'all how much I love mixing food coloring? I think it's the way the frosting/batter becomes more colorful..and bright..and cheerful..

..I'm torn! Amazingly pretty-ful white frosted layer cake with rainbows inside, or amazingly adorable little cake with rainbows outside? :I

..a more unique twist. Wedding cake? :)

..nah. :P

Something about this cake makes me want to grab a handful of it and stuff my face. o.O
..Hehe.
Not such a good idea, methinks? :]

*craves rainbow cake fight*

♥ It's. My. Dream. Cupcake. ♥

Grand finale photo? I think so. Ahhh!! Rainbow jello!!

..maybe for my half-birthday? ;)

*must leave now*

So what is your 'dream cake?'

Shall We Lark Rise to Candleford?

I know, my title doesn't make sense. :) But I had to get your attentions someone, didn't i?? Because if you haven't seen the TV series (now made into DVD episodes) Lark Rise to Candleford, it is about time you did. You won't be sorry--and you may even find yourself staying up late nights "just to see how this one ends..." ;)

Based on novels by 19th century British writer Flora Thompson, the BBC does, as usual, an outstanding job portraying Miss Thompson's sketch of  those who are residing in the English countryside. The poor Hamlet town, Lark Rise, and its tiny "bustling" nearby town, Candleford find themselves in rows at times, but they are bound together by lasting friendship that refuses to wither.

Boasting a cast of superb actresses and actors icluding Olivia Hallinan, Julia Sawalha, Claudie Blakley, and Brendan Coyle, these tales will bring tears, laughter, and good old "proper British accents."

Main Characters:

Julia Sawalha
as
Dorcase Lane

(Some of you might recognize Julia as Lydia Bennet from the 1995 version of Pride and Predjudice.)

Dorcas is the postmistress of Candleford, and a wise woman who is a friend to all. With a good head on her shoulders, she is often heard giving good advice to any who might need it, and truly strives to seek out the best in everyone.

Olivia Hallinan
as
Laura Timmins

The narrator of the whole 'story,' and the one is writing it all down. Dorcas Lane's cousin, Laura, is a Lark Rise girl who has come to live with her in order to "learn her way in the world" by experiencing a job at the post office. She is highly sensitive, but kind, and dedicated to doing her postal rounds and every other job well. She is also a writer, but has only ever recorded things in her diary (which the whole series is based off of).
On a side note--one thing I don't like about Laura is that she is constantly falling in love. Well, it isn't her fault that the two guys she loves either move away or do something foolish..But then again, she is seriously so gorgeous, so maybe she can't help it? :) All will turn out well, I am certain. Also, she looks almost exactly like a second cousin of mine..:)

Claudie Blakely and Brendan Coyle
asEmma and Robert Timmins

Laura's loving, poor parents, who have sent their daughter to Candleford so that she may find a better way in the world than they have. Robert is a stone mason, and Emma is a wife and mother. Robert doesn't have much money, but does have a lot of pride...much to the despair of his wife and himself, at times.

Matilda Ziegler and Victoria Hamilton
as
The Pratt Sisters

Two of my favorite characters. :) Yes, they are snobs at times (particularly Pearl), but they have had a hard life and are just making it by, though they would never dare to say, with their dress making shoppe. Their own fashion makes me laugh, and with each episode I eagerly await what outfit they are wearing this time..always matching, of course, though they are not twins. o_O I like Ruby the best; she is not a snob by her own accord, and has a sweetness and patience with her overruling sister that we would all do well to copy.

Mark Heap
as
Thomas Brown

Thomas Brown also works at the post office under Dorcas Lane (which he sometimes dislikes). He is a comical man without meaning to be--very 'religious;' though I don't really like how they portray Christianity by making it seem strict, good works along with it all, etc. They almost make fun of Christians through Thomas Brown by making him exceedinly snobbish towards things deemed 'wrong' by the church, and having him be so set in his ways. But, he means well, and is tender hearted as well as a good worker...though a little shy and put-offish of things he is afraid to do (like ask someone to marry him after who knows how many years of muttering and dodging..).

 John Dagelish
as
Alf Arliss

Another one of my favorites. :) He isn't much to look at, but has a heart of gold, caring for his siblings tenderly while his mother in in debtor's prison (because of her drinking habits) and his father is away at sea.  He is a Hamlet boy, and poor as the rest of them, working on the land for little pay. But he is fond of music, and is {nearly} always cheerful.

Ruby Bentall
as
Minnie

Not exactly the "maid" of Dorcas Lane..more like, the young girl who needs to be taught to clean a home properly. Minnie is silly, and can be found annoying at times..but I like her, mostly. :) I hate her stupid curly bit of bangs, though..so hideous. :P

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Men in Laura's Life:

Picture
Alf Arliss

Picture
Philip White
(Oliver Jackson Cohen)

Picture
Fisher Bloom
(Matthew McNulty)

Picture
Daniel Parish
(Ben Aldridge)

..I won't be a spoiler here, but yes, she does choose one of them in the end. ;) My favorite is Fisher..everyone else likes Daniel, and yes, he is good-looking, ;) but Daniel is always wearing his prim suit, has a refined accent, and I've never seen him get his hands dirty (aside from ink). Despite the unattractive name, Fisher has the coolest Scottish accent ever, wears respectable working clothes, and is a clock maker/fixer. Oh, yeah. And I personally think he is better looking than Daniel. :P

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unlike most modern television programs, Lark Rise to Candleford is fresh, innocent, and timeless. Even the episodes that deal with perhaps more delicate matters are very discreett, and it is even easy to miss what they are talking about, it is so hidden and disguised!

..I have seen seasons one through three so far, and was alarmed when I heard a rumor about the BBC perhaps not finishing off the series with number four. But, they have, and it is now available. Hurrah! <3 Now if only season four will hurry and get to out library...the only bad thing about this series is that they are so wonderfully addicting, you finish them all and are left wishing for more! ;)

If you hadn't noticed..I love Lark Rise to Candleford!

Now.

Go. Watch. It. :)

P.S. (This is my 250th post! Hip-hip-hooray! *Passes out cookies and lemondade*)
