only hope. ♥

[ Mandy Moore as quiet Jamie Sullivan in the 2002 film, A Walk to Remember. ]

There are some songs that just touch you.
This is one.

It is from the movie A Walk to Remember, which in itself is a tear-jerker (new favorite movie...made me cry buckets..review coming up soon..). Jamie Sullivan ( played by Mandy Moore), the un-stylish, Jesus-loving, gentle and quiet girl who is the base of the film, sings it for a school play. If you watch the whole movie, see its sad-slash-wonderful ending, and then listen to this song again, the whole effect is...breathtaking.

Here is the piano version, with "Jamie" (Mandy Moore) singing...I love this version a whole lot better than the original Switchfoot version with guitar/drums/raspy voices. :]

Listen and love, friends.

Only Hope
By Switchfoot

There's a song that's inside of my soul
It's the one that I've tried to write over
And over and over and over again
I'm awake in the infinite cold
But You sing to me over
And over and over again

So I lay my head back down
And I lift my hands and pray
To be only Your's, I pray
To be only Your's
I know now You're my only hope...

p.s. (learning this on the piano is a good idea, methinks. isn't it beautiful? ♥♥ also..I know my giveaways end on the 20th, but I won't be back till the 23rd; thus, you may still enter until then, if you are reading this after the 20th.)

"nancy was a titian-haired, slim, attractive girl..."

There's just something about old movies. The black-and-white, the vintage outfits, the women with their adorable floofy hairstyles and the men with their slick suits.

And then, there's the old books. My, how I enjoy them--the unique, {somewhat cheesy} suited-to-the-time writing style, the eloquent description of the snack Mrs. Roberts had waiting for little Bobby when he returned from school..they cheer me up. My, how I love the 'olden days.'

Nancy Drew is one of my favorite 'olden days' heroines. Not only did I grow up on all 30+ books bound in their yellow covers and illustrated in the charming pen-and-ink fashion, but recently, I discovered the "Nancy Drew Episodes" which were created based on the books in the mid to late 1930's. Bonita Granville stars as the super sleuth Nancy (have any "Nancy Drew" readers ever noticed that they over-use this word in the books? That and "the slim, attractive titian-haired girl..." :P), Frankie Thomas plays Ted Nickerson (yes, they changed his name. Lame!), and John Litel as Carson Drew.

On the movies:

There are four mysteries in the series (I wish there were more!):

Nancy Drew, Reporter
Nancy Drew, Trouble Shooter
Nancy Drew, Detective
Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase

...all of the stories are rather cheesy little mysteries, so if you're looking for some 'thrilling action,' there is none. :) But, I find them all extremely cute, comical, and entertaining. I think Olivia and I have watched all four of them at least five times each. :]

On the cast:

Bonita Granville
as
Nancy Drew

Bonita is an okay Nancy, but I find her character slightly annoying at times. In the movies, Nancy is a very jealous creature, and spoiled, too (which is seen when she doesn't want her father to get married...she wants him all to herself!). She whines and wheedles alot, and is rather deceitful. But, she is cute, and she was only 16 when filming the movies, and fits how I imagined Nancy's physical appearance to be. She also comes across as very clever and thoughtful, which is good.

Frankie Thomas
as
Ted Nickerson

I don't like that his name is changed from "Ned," but I love how this character is, in the movies, WAY better than in the books. The Ned of the written series is too perfect, and too lovey-dovey for me. Frankie portrays Ned--er--Ted wonderfully...he is absolutely hilarious, and does not seem like Nancy's "boyfriend" at all. Instead, he seems like he almost resents her always being around...in good reason: she is extremely pushy towards him. Anyways, Ted is great, and I wouldn't like the series without him!

Photobucket
John Litel
as
Carson Drew

I think John is a good Carson..though his character does treat Nancy like a very small child alot of the time. Which is okay, but she is supposed to have proven herself a good detective by now, and he makes it seem like she can't be trusted to dust fingerprints by herself! I like how John acts the part, though; he has a good fatherly atmosphere and comes across as a careful but fun-loving dad.

Nancy and Frank

I just love these movies, and always will. If you haven't seen them yet, and are in for something that will cheer you right up...do!

Childhood Movie Memories...♥

I have such vivid memories of sitting in front of our tiny 12 x 12" screen TV, out of breath from racing inside, muddy from a day's play, eating my graham crackers and cheese. Settling on our hard table bench as the theme song begins to one of the usual shows.

::sigh::

..We didn't have many stations on our little TV, but Mom would always lets us watch an hour of channel 10 every day, if we finished our school work and had been outside for some time. It was here, eating my graham crackers and cheese or yogurt, sipping my chocolate milk, that I created fond childhood movie memories. ♥ I just loved them all. I didn't even know they were educational--all I knew was that I dare not miss a minute of "Mr. Rogers," for fear he would leave for the "Neighborhood of Makebelieve" without me. I loved the "Zoom" theme song, and could sing along word for word. "Zabumafu" made me laugh, and I always thought that if I just cracked a hole in the television's glass screen, the little Lemur Monkey would come and hang on my head, too.

My other homes were...

• Barney and Friends

 • Mr. Roger's Neighborhood

• Richard Scarry's Busytown

• Zoom

• Zabumafu

• Reading Rainbow

• Lawrence Welk Re-runs

Good night, sleep tight,
And pleasent dreams to you
Here's a wish and a prayer
That every dream comes true
And now, till we meet again:

"Nighty-night! Au'revior! Auf Weidersehen!"

:: Ah. I miss the good old Saturday nights with Lawrence. ::

Shall We Lark Rise to Candleford?

I know, my title doesn't make sense. :) But I had to get your attentions someone, didn't i?? Because if you haven't seen the TV series (now made into DVD episodes) Lark Rise to Candleford, it is about time you did. You won't be sorry--and you may even find yourself staying up late nights "just to see how this one ends..." ;)

Based on novels by 19th century British writer Flora Thompson, the BBC does, as usual, an outstanding job portraying Miss Thompson's sketch of  those who are residing in the English countryside. The poor Hamlet town, Lark Rise, and its tiny "bustling" nearby town, Candleford find themselves in rows at times, but they are bound together by lasting friendship that refuses to wither.

Boasting a cast of superb actresses and actors icluding Olivia Hallinan, Julia Sawalha, Claudie Blakley, and Brendan Coyle, these tales will bring tears, laughter, and good old "proper British accents."

Main Characters:

Julia Sawalha
as
Dorcase Lane

(Some of you might recognize Julia as Lydia Bennet from the 1995 version of Pride and Predjudice.)

Dorcas is the postmistress of Candleford, and a wise woman who is a friend to all. With a good head on her shoulders, she is often heard giving good advice to any who might need it, and truly strives to seek out the best in everyone.

Olivia Hallinan
as
Laura Timmins

The narrator of the whole 'story,' and the one is writing it all down. Dorcas Lane's cousin, Laura, is a Lark Rise girl who has come to live with her in order to "learn her way in the world" by experiencing a job at the post office. She is highly sensitive, but kind, and dedicated to doing her postal rounds and every other job well. She is also a writer, but has only ever recorded things in her diary (which the whole series is based off of).
On a side note--one thing I don't like about Laura is that she is constantly falling in love. Well, it isn't her fault that the two guys she loves either move away or do something foolish..But then again, she is seriously so gorgeous, so maybe she can't help it? :) All will turn out well, I am certain. Also, she looks almost exactly like a second cousin of mine..:)

Claudie Blakely and Brendan Coyle
asEmma and Robert Timmins

Laura's loving, poor parents, who have sent their daughter to Candleford so that she may find a better way in the world than they have. Robert is a stone mason, and Emma is a wife and mother. Robert doesn't have much money, but does have a lot of pride...much to the despair of his wife and himself, at times.

Matilda Ziegler and Victoria Hamilton
as
The Pratt Sisters

Two of my favorite characters. :) Yes, they are snobs at times (particularly Pearl), but they have had a hard life and are just making it by, though they would never dare to say, with their dress making shoppe. Their own fashion makes me laugh, and with each episode I eagerly await what outfit they are wearing this time..always matching, of course, though they are not twins. o_O I like Ruby the best; she is not a snob by her own accord, and has a sweetness and patience with her overruling sister that we would all do well to copy.

Mark Heap
as
Thomas Brown

Thomas Brown also works at the post office under Dorcas Lane (which he sometimes dislikes). He is a comical man without meaning to be--very 'religious;' though I don't really like how they portray Christianity by making it seem strict, good works along with it all, etc. They almost make fun of Christians through Thomas Brown by making him exceedinly snobbish towards things deemed 'wrong' by the church, and having him be so set in his ways. But, he means well, and is tender hearted as well as a good worker...though a little shy and put-offish of things he is afraid to do (like ask someone to marry him after who knows how many years of muttering and dodging..).

 John Dagelish
as
Alf Arliss

Another one of my favorites. :) He isn't much to look at, but has a heart of gold, caring for his siblings tenderly while his mother in in debtor's prison (because of her drinking habits) and his father is away at sea.  He is a Hamlet boy, and poor as the rest of them, working on the land for little pay. But he is fond of music, and is {nearly} always cheerful.

Ruby Bentall
as
Minnie

Not exactly the "maid" of Dorcas Lane..more like, the young girl who needs to be taught to clean a home properly. Minnie is silly, and can be found annoying at times..but I like her, mostly. :) I hate her stupid curly bit of bangs, though..so hideous. :P

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Men in Laura's Life:

Picture
Alf Arliss

Picture
Philip White
(Oliver Jackson Cohen)

Picture
Fisher Bloom
(Matthew McNulty)

Picture
Daniel Parish
(Ben Aldridge)

..I won't be a spoiler here, but yes, she does choose one of them in the end. ;) My favorite is Fisher..everyone else likes Daniel, and yes, he is good-looking, ;) but Daniel is always wearing his prim suit, has a refined accent, and I've never seen him get his hands dirty (aside from ink). Despite the unattractive name, Fisher has the coolest Scottish accent ever, wears respectable working clothes, and is a clock maker/fixer. Oh, yeah. And I personally think he is better looking than Daniel. :P

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unlike most modern television programs, Lark Rise to Candleford is fresh, innocent, and timeless. Even the episodes that deal with perhaps more delicate matters are very discreett, and it is even easy to miss what they are talking about, it is so hidden and disguised!

..I have seen seasons one through three so far, and was alarmed when I heard a rumor about the BBC perhaps not finishing off the series with number four. But, they have, and it is now available. Hurrah! <3 Now if only season four will hurry and get to out library...the only bad thing about this series is that they are so wonderfully addicting, you finish them all and are left wishing for more! ;)

If you hadn't noticed..I love Lark Rise to Candleford!

Now.

Go. Watch. It. :)

~2010 Favorite "Cute" Movies!~

I totally saw more movies this year than I have for a long time. Including
two 3D theatre movies! I mean, I had only been to a theatre *once* before that, so, this was a pretty big deal! Here are three of my favorite 2010 movies..

~2010 Favorite "Cute" Movies~

..Okay, this movie was seriously one of the cutest animated films I've seen. And in 3D??! Breathtaking. Gorgeous coloring, detail--and that's just talking about the animation. The story was adorable, and the whole film was touching and hilarious at the same time. Definitly a chick-flick, though...not a movie that I'd reccomend dragging your brothers into! ;) Also, Princess Rapunzel wears a rather lowish top most of the time, so~~yeah..a girl movie.

~Heehee!~

Some of My Favorite Details About the Movie {watch for these, if you see it!}:

1. Her hair when the little girls braid it up with flowers...GORGEOUS! I know, I know..it's animated..still! :D

2. The horse~~the cutest little {ahem, BIG} guy ever! I loved him from the beginning..

3. The "frying pan" thing..haha! If you see this, you'll know what I'm talking about. :D

4. The lanterns..again, in 3D, the "lantern part" is AMAZING! Look for it. :)

5. The..little lizard thing. Super cute, haha! :)

~Love that hair!~

And....can you guess what next? ;)

I really, really liked this movie. Wayy better than Prince Caspian..and, okay, JUST to warn you f you haven't seen it yet--they do add a lot. But. I like how they change it, actually! I won't be a spoiler, so, you'll just have to wait and see what they did. :D

Things I Loved {And Hated}:

1. LOVE: Lucy's hair. It's super pretty! And I can't believe she wants to change her looks...:(

2. HATE: Eustace's voice. It is seriously piggish! Eww..and his nose. And his whole self. Hehe...

3. LOVE: How Edmund has changed since the first time he came to Narnia... :) He was pretty awesome in this movie!

4. LOVE: How Caspian suddenly has a British accent, instead of a Spanish one...hmm. Who else noticed?

~And I actually really love Lucy's outfit...I think it's pretty!~

This was adorable. :) All I can say! It's about a little boy who moves in next door to a little girl. The little girl looks at him and automatically knows that he is going to be hers someday. :) Heehee...pretty funny! So, they grow up, and....you have to wait and see! ;) The only problem I had with it was that the girl and guy actually don't completely grow up before things start to happen...they are in, like, 7th grade the whole time. Which I don't exactly approve of...but, it was still good. :)

~They look wayyy older than 7th grade, in my opinion...~

Have you seen any of these movies?? If so, what was your opinion of them? Or, what were some of your favorite 2010 "cutest movies?"

~*~

Blessings,
::Lucia::
